Day 1: Mekelle to Erta Ale Volcano

The tour begins on the morning departs from Mekelle at 9am. There is a long drive to reach to the base of the volcano called Askoma. On the way lunch and some permission activities are considered with the time. It’s about 7 hours driving half asphalt and half pista with a worse difficulties covered about 80 km sand and 12km gravel roads. This is an adventure driving takes 7 hours to the base of the erta ale volcano. You enjoy the driving hours by taking pictures and watching widely spaced desert trees and loosely distributed residents. After this tempting driving you arrive on the camp Askoma. You stay in Askoma for about 2 hours until the sun gets down. You start tracking on the late afternoon to the top of the mountain. All the items and some water and foods (matress and sleeping bag with sheets) needs loaded by a camel and follows as to the top of the mountain. It takes 3 hours trekking passing strewn small trees and sharp volcanic rocks with a little bit difficulties. The hiking is just walking for about 7 km and hiking 1km a little bit steeper and totally covered 8km from the place you start trekking to the top of the volcano. Erta ale volcano is 613m above sea level. It is unspecified diameter in its apogee but daily expanding and becomes wider than the last eruption held before 2 years in 2015. After 10 minutes rest you will go down 200m away from the top of the mountain to 5m away the lip of the volcano to see the enchanting and breathtaking movements of the lava lake. This is the only volcano quite near to see from the existing active lava lakes in the world. And its mysteriously attractive and patient taking nature from other natural touristic destinations found in Ethiopia. Overnight on the top of the mountain on prepared small huts.

Day 2: Walk around pits and craters

5.30 am early morning you will see the striking activities of the volcano on the day time. You will be back to the camp (Askoma) 3 hours trekking down. You will pass with scattered small dessert trees and an igneous rock from the many years eruption of the volcano. And you will eat your breakfast on the camp Askoma. After 1 hour rest and arranging of cooking materials and all the sleeping materials, you will proceed to Lake Afdera for lunch. You can swim in this salt lake. And then proceed to Abbala via Eripti. Aballa is a small village with a population…… you enjoy the afternoon with the afar peoples custom and culture. Overnight Aballa village.

Day 3: Back to Mekelle

Early morning breakfast to start driving to Dallol. Dallol Danakil is the astounding and staggering place of the earth. It’s the second lowest point in earth after the dead sea of Israel with in an average of 116m below sea level. This breathtaking place has many salt springs with different colors and structures. It has a composition of many minerals with extra outstanding of sulfur and potassium elements. The place where the salt digging out from the ground is part of this overwhelming place. It covers 50km square and 50km thick. You will see the phenomenal sites of the desert place including the sulfur and potassium place, salt mountains, oil lakes and the salt mining place. After all the enjoyable visit of Danakil depression you will drive to Mekelle via Berahle and finish the unforgettable Danakil trip.
